Beast (Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy) is a fictional character, a superhero that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, as well as in a number of movie, television, and video game adaptations; typically in fiction related to the X-Men. The character was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in the first issue of the original X-Men comic book, published in 1963.
Beast is a member of a fictional subspecies of humanity known as "mutants", who are born with superhuman abilities. He has superhuman strength and ape-like agility. In most depictions he also has blue fur, fangs, and claws. He is primarily a member of the X-Men, a group of mutant heroes who fight for peace and equality between mutants and humans. However, he has also served as a central member of the superhero team known as the Avengers.
