Publisher`s description - Sri Lankan Baila
Baila is the term used to describe a form of dance music popular on the island of Sri Lanka (also known as Ceylon in anciant times).
The genre originated centuries ago among the "kaffir" or Afro-Sri Lankan communities (mixed communities consiting of Portuguese, African and, native Sri Lankan people), and was later amalgamated with Europian instruments and eastern and western rythms, especially rythms found in Spain and northern Europian folk music.
Baila music, though popular as a folk art for centuries in the country, was introduced to Sri Lanka's main stream during the early years of the 1960s when singer Wally Basian (who was also happened to be a police officer), began adapting the 6/8 "kaffirhinna" rythms to accomodate Sinhala lyrics.
